• Steam Therapy: Controlled bursts of steam are delivered into the prostate tissue. The heat causes the tissue to break down gradually.
• Tissue Absorption: Over the next few weeks, the body absorbs the treated tissue, easing urinary symptoms.

The procedure itself takes just a few minutes and is typically done in an outpatient setting.

What to Expect After the Procedure

Recovery is generally smooth, but it’s helpful to know what to expect:

• Mild Side Effects: Temporary blood in the urine and a burning sensation while urinating are common and usually clear up within 7 to 10 days.
• Symptom Relief: It takes about six weeks for the body to absorb the treated tissue and for symptoms to improve fully.
• Bladder Adjustment: Some patients may experience temporary overactive bladder symptoms for up to three months as the bladder adjusts.
• Fertility Consideration: There’s a small risk of retrograde ejaculation, where semen flows into the bladder instead of exiting the body. This doesn’t affect overall health but could impact fertility.

Rezum works best for men with mild to moderate prostate enlargement. It may not be as effective for significantly enlarged prostates or certain anatomical conditions.
