Considering a Vasectomy?

If you are a man who no longer wishes to have children and are considering a vasectomy, here is some important information for you to know.

A vasectomy is more than 99 percent effective and is intended to be permanent; however, it can be reversed in certain cases. The procedure usually takes between 15 and 30 minutes. Most men experience very little pain or discomfort and are able to return to nearly all activities typically within a week.

Additionally, a vasectomy does not affect male hormone or testosterone levels so your sex drive and ability to have an erection will remain the same.

Generally, a vasectomy is performed in our office or the GU ambulatory surgery center under local anesthesia. Georgia Urology (GU) performed more than 1,700 last year.

Following the procedure, your urologist will give you specific instructions about returning to work and sexual activity. Most men recover completely in less than a week and many are able to return to their job as early as 24 to 48 hours after the procedure. Sexual activity can usually be resumed within a week.

You must take a number of semen samples and it may take several months to ensure that the procedure has been completely effective.
