Vasectomy Prep Instructions

You should stop any prescribed blood thinners (e.g. aspirin, Coumadin, Xarelto, Eliquis, Plavix, etc.) prior to the procedure. The amount of time will depend on the specific medication. Please check with the prescribing doctor before discontinuing this medication, for instructions on when to stop and when to resume these medications.
One week (7 days) prior to your procedure, you should discontinue any anti-inflammatory medication (NSAIDs), such as Motrin, Advil, Aleve, or Naprosyn.
This procedure may be performed with the administration of nitrous oxide (ProNox). You do not require a driver, though it may be recommended.
If you were given a prescription for Valium, please remember to fill it out before arriving at the office. However, do NOT take it until signing in on the day of the visit.
Carefully shave all hair from the upper scrotum. Wear or bring close-fitting underwear that will support the scrotum (jock strap or tight jockey shorts).
Wear comfortable clothing. Shower before leaving home. You may bring headphones and music if you prefer.
You may be given a prescription for pain medication. In most cases, ibuprofen (Advil or Motrin) is enough to relieve discomfort following your vasectomy. You may also be given an antibiotic prescription to start after the procedure.

Georgia Urology does not perform the post-vasectomy semen analysis. Instead, we offer the Fellow test kit for your convenience.
